"CDC Implements Pathogen Testing for Boston Travelers"

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is expanding its infectious disease surveillance program to include testing for more than 30 pathogens, including flu, RSV, and other respiratory viruses, at Boston's Logan Airport and three other airports. The program, which has been successful in detecting COVID-19 variants before they were reported nationwide, will also look for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The testing is voluntary and anonymous, with thousands of travelers participating each week. The program has already tested over 370,000 travelers and collected samples from more than 135 countries.

CDC Enhances Infectious Disease Surveillance at Key U.S. Airports

The CDC is expanding its infectious disease surveillance program at four major U.S. airports, including Boston Logan International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Dulles International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport. The program involves voluntary self-collection of nasal swab samples from international travelers, which are then tested for various pathogens, including RSV and the flu. Positive samples undergo further analysis, including whole genome sequencing, to identify variants. Additionally, the CDC is expanding its airplane wastewater program to detect variants through the collection and testing of wastewater samples. The traveler surveillance program, which began in September 2021, currently operates at six major U.S. international airports.
