James Beard Awards 2023: A Recap of the Winners.

Sherry Pocknett, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, has become the first indigenous woman to win a James Beard Award for culinary excellence. Pocknett creates Indigenous cuisine that comes from her Wampanoag culture at her restaurant, Sly Fox Den Too, located in Charlestown, Rhode Island. She is a first-time nominee for the Beard award and the second Native American to win a national Beard award in the past two years. Pocknett gave an emotional speech, saying she represented all the northeastern tribes and never expected the honor of receiving the Beard award.

Cuba Pushes for Yuca-Based Casabe to be Recognized as UNESCO Heritage.

Casabe, a flatbread made of yuca root, is making a comeback in Cuba as a gluten-free alternative to bread. It is one of Cuba's oldest Indigenous meals and is being promoted by restaurants and officials seeking its addition to UNESCO's prized intangible cultural heritage list. Casabe was a key part of the diet of Indigenous peoples in the Caribbean and was also among the first native products embraced by the Spaniards upon their arrival. Casabe enthusiasts hope it will be widely embraced as a healthy, sustainable meal that preserves an Indigenous tradition.
