A new report from the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention has linked iguana bites to a rare bacterial infection called mycobacterium marinum. The infection usually infects humans only after a wound has been exposed to the bacteria in water. Most antibiotics alone don’t typically work on mycobacterium marinum, so doctors put the patient on rifampin and clarithromycin. Iguanas also pose health risks through their feces, which can cause salmonella.
