Pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Memphis shut down lanes on the I-40 bridge during a protest, causing traffic to back up before eventually allowing cars to pass through. The protestors demanded a response from local leaders and called for a ceasefire in Palestine, with no arrests made as police worked to clear the roadway and restore traffic flow.
Memphis Fire Department attempted to rescue a person who was on a beam underneath the I-40 bridge, but were unable to locate anyone. The eastbound lanes of the Hernando DeSoto bridge were closed, and drivers were asked to take I-55 as an alternate route. Meanwhile, traffic on I-55 was slowed due to a separate fatal accident. The I-40 bridge was shut down for weeks in 2021 after a large crack was found in a metal beam.

Memphis Fire Department officials responded to a call to check debris on the I-40 bridge and noticed someone beneath it, prompting rescue crews to be called in. Despite the efforts of Memphis police and Tennessee Department of Transportation crews, no one was found. Traffic has since reopened.
A multivehicle wreck blocked the I-40 bridge coming into Memphis near the western side of the Hernando-DeSoto Bridge as it crosses the Mississippi River, causing traffic to back up as far as Mound City Road in Crittenden County. By 6 p.m., traffic was again flowing on both sides of the bridge.
