International Human Rights Day: The Plight of Gaza's Forgotten Voices

On International Human Rights Day, the people of Gaza are left disillusioned as the Biden administration and European countries refuse to condemn the killing of Palestinian children and civilians. This apathy towards civilian lives has shattered faith in human rights conventions and international norms. Western development agencies' efforts to promote human rights in the region have been undermined, and civil society organizations have canceled events due to embarrassment. Human rights defenders in the Arab region feel let down and guilty for their past cooperation with these agencies. The hypocrisy and double standards displayed by world leaders have pushed many towards extremism, while regimes in the Middle East continue to demonize and persecute human rights activists. Rehabilitation and the search for alternative allies who genuinely believe in justice and tolerance are needed to restore the collapsed relationship with human rights principles.

Taliban Releases Imprisoned Afghan Education Activist

Matiullah Wesa, an Afghan activist who campaigned for girls' education, has been released by the Taliban after spending 215 days in prison. Wesa, who had been advocating for the right of girls to go to school, was arrested seven months ago. Since their takeover, the Taliban have imposed restrictions on female education, barring girls from school beyond the sixth grade and banning women from universities. Wesa's release was welcomed by the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, who called for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained human rights defenders. Amnesty International also criticized Wesa's imprisonment and called for the release of other activists.
