etaHEN Set to Launch on PS5 Bypassing Supervisor Firmware

PlayStation developer LightningMods is working on porting the PS5 Homebrew Enabler (etaHEN) to the Byepervisor exploit, which allows for reading and writing to kernel memory at runtime, overcoming limitations of the hypervisor on Jailbroken consoles. This development could enhance performance and features compared to the existing kstuff method, which is slower and harder to port to new firmwares. The etaHEN port will initially support PS5 firmwares vulnerable to Byepervisor, specifically versions 1.xx and 2.xx, offering features like a modified Debug menu, plugins, and a Homebrew Store.

"Nintendo's Legal Battle: Emulator Makers Accused of Massive Piracy"

Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the makers of the Yuzu emulator, alleging that the emulator enables users to play pirated copies of Nintendo Switch games. The lawsuit argues that using Yuzu to play games on platforms other than the Switch is forbidden, and that the majority of Yuzu users are using it to play downloaded pirated games. However, potential defenses for the emulator maker include the ability to run homebrew Nintendo Switch games and the legality of making personal archival copies of legitimately purchased software. The case raises questions about the extent of Nintendo's control over how its games are used and accessed.

"PS5 Hackable Firmwares Now Support kstuff and etaHEN Ports for Backup"

A porting script by Sleirsgoevy has enabled the running of Propser0gdb stack and etaHEN on most hackable PS5 firmwares, allowing for PS5 backup support. The PS5 scene has seen significant progress over the holidays, with the development of tools such as Prosper0GDB, kstuff, etaHEN, and Itemzflow, enabling the running of PS5 apps and backups. Tutorials on dumping and running PS5 games with ItemzFlow are available, and the exploits can be downloaded from public hosts or self-hosted.

Exciting Developments in PS5 Hacking Scene: FPKG Support, Firmware Updates, and GoldHEN Progress

Rumors are circulating about potential developments in the PS5 hacking scene by Christmas. Zecoxao, a well-known figure in the hacking community, has made several predictions, including the release of Sistr0's GoldHEN and cheat support, Sleirsgoevy's investigation into PS5 FPKG support (which has since been debunked), TheFloW's disclosure of a userland and kernel exploit, and a special surprise for the PSP, PS2, and possibly the PS5. While some of these predictions have already been confirmed or are highly likely, the exact timing and release of these developments remain uncertain.

"Expanding PS5 FPKG Support: Advancements in Firmware Porting"

PS5 hacker Sleirsgoevy has released PS4 FPKG support on the PS5, allowing the console to run PS4 homebrew and backups. Currently only compatible with PS5 Firmware 4.03, Sleirsgoevy has provided instructions on how to port the support to other firmwares. Recent commits to the developer's github repository include compatibility with SpecterDev's payload format and scripts to aid in porting. Additionally, a python script has been added to assist in porting PS4 FPKG to more PS5 firmwares. The developer has also introduced support for "FrankenELF," a patched version of payloads/ELF files that are compatible with SpecterDev's ELF Loader. Users can download and use the "PS4 FPKG Enabler" on PS5 running firmware 4.03.

Virtual Boy Enthusiast Revives Nintendo's Forgotten Console with New Tech and Games

Despite being considered a failure, the Virtual Boy console from Nintendo has a small but dedicated community of engineers and developers who are keeping the system alive nearly three decades after its release. Kevin Mellott, the engineer behind RetroOnyx, is creating and selling after-market hardware for the Virtual Boy, including power adaptors and flashcarts. He has also funded the development of Virtual WarZone, a tank combat game built specifically for the Virtual Boy. Mellott's passion for the console stems from his childhood fascination with its 3D capabilities, and he plans to continue supporting the development of original titles for the Virtual Boy through RetroOnyx. He is currently working on a new flashcart called MultiBoy, which will allow players to access the Virtual Boy's entire library and select games through an on-screen menu.

Astrelsky Demonstrates PS5 Homebrew Proof-of-Concept.

Developer Astrelsky has released a Proof-of-concept file for Homebrew on the PS5, which dumps the kernel data to disc. This is not a homebrew enabler for PS5 (HEN), yet. The Homebrew is running in its own process and is using so files instead of pulling everything from dlsym. The release doesn’t include any sources, which is intentional for now. Once integrated into the PS5 Homebrew SDK, this will allow the SDK to generate Homebrew instead of ELF files running in the same process as the exploit.

New 3DS update blocks homebrew and piracy methods.

Nintendo has released a new firmware update for its discontinued 3DS console, which has broken many common methods for installing homebrew software. The update is the first since September 2020 and the fifth since the console was discontinued. While the update doesn't affect custom firmware installed prior to the update, it does limit options for those who have updated. The update is expected to be a mere speedbump for 3DS owners who want to enjoy homebrew software on their legacy portables.

"NES gets online multiplayer with custom cartridge"

Indie developer Broke Studio has created Super Tilt Bro., an open-source eight-bit fighting game with platform mechanics that introduces Wi-Fi-enabled online multiplayer to the NES console. The game cartridge supports online co-op multiplayer on unmodified NES consoles thanks to a custom board that sports an ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip, a Wi-Fi antenna, and an FPGA circuit. Broke Studio is raising money to cover the hardware manufacturing cost through a Kickstarter campaign, with the game expected to ship globally by April 2024.
