Micron forecasts strong quarterly revenue driven by rising demand for AI-related memory chips, especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM), with supply expected to remain tight into next year, positioning the company as a key player in AI technology growth.
The US has imposed new export controls on high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips to China, aiming to limit China's access to advanced technology crucial for AI applications. HBM chips, which offer faster data transmission and larger storage than traditional DRAM, are essential for AI processors. The restrictions are part of broader US efforts to curb China's technological and military advancements. In response, China is developing its own HBM capabilities, though currently lagging behind major producers like South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung, and the US's Micron.
Micron reported better-than-expected second quarter earnings, with revenue at $5.82 billion and adjusted EPS at $0.42, surpassing analyst estimates. TD Cowen Managing Director Krish Sankar praised the company for exceeding all expectations and highlighted the surging demand for high bandwidth memory, positively impacting Micron's outlook. Sankar remains optimistic about pricing and sees Micron as a major beneficiary of the boost in AI spending.
