Resurgence of Skin Rash Amid Pandemic Recovery.

Pityriasis rosea, a temporary but often unbearably itchy skin rash, almost disappeared during the pandemic but has now resurged. The cause of the rash is unknown, but its pandemic-related behavior suggests that an infectious agent, possibly spread through respiratory droplets or saliva, may be to blame. Some evidence points to human herpesviruses 6 and 7, which have been found in patients' skin lesions and saliva. Diagnosing pityriasis rosea can be difficult, and it can be life-altering due to its intolerable itchiness. Remedies include prescription topical steroid cream, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory creams, over-the-counter antihistamines, oatmeal baths, and moisturizers.

Discovery of Link between Herpesviruses and Giant Viruses.

Researchers with the Tara Oceans project have discovered a new phylum of DNA viruses called mirusviruses that are shaped like herpesviruses and infect eukaryotes but share a key enzyme with large and giant viruses. The mirusviruses are among the most abundant eukaryotic viruses in the sunlit oceans and are super active within the plankton they infect, indicating that they likely play key roles in the marine ecosystem. The discovery suggests that these eukaryotic viruses share a common ancestor with herpesviruses, and the authors speculate that the shared enzyme was transferred between a giant virus and this common ancestor.

Unprecedented Ocean Viruses Discovered by Scientists.

A new type of virus called mirusviruses has been discovered on the sunlit surface of oceans and seas. These viruses are related to both giant viruses and herpesviruses and belong to a group of viruses called Duplodnaviria. They tend to infect single-celled plankton and have never been seen before. The discovery of mirusviruses sheds light on the evolutionary history of herpesviruses and reminds us of the complexity of even the most abundant double-stranded DNA viruses in key ecosystems such as the surface of our oceans and seas.

Uncovering the Hidden World of Oceanic Viruses and Bacteria.

Scientists have discovered a new group of viruses called mirusviruses that thrive in sunlit oceans and infect plankton. The viruses belong to a large group of viruses called Duplodnaviria, which includes herpesviruses that infect animals and humans. However, the newfound viruses also share a staggering number of genes with a group of giant viruses called Varidnaviria, suggesting that mirusviruses are a hybrid between two distantly related viral lineages. The discovery highlights how little we know about the viruses lurking in Earth's oceans.
