New Dinosaur Haolong dongi Wore Hollow, Porcupine-Like Spikes

Scientists describe Haolong dongi, a juvenile iguanodontian from northeastern China, with hollow, porcupine-like spikes along its neck, back, and sides. The 2.45 m skeleton is exceptionally well-preserved, but the spikes’ purpose remains unclear—defense, display, or sensing—while pigment was not detected and they are not protofeathers. The discovery broadens our view of dinosaur skin and was published in Nature Ecology & Evolution (2026).

Haolong dongi reveals hollow skin spikes, a first in dinosaur anatomy

A well-preserved juvenile iguanodontian from Early Cretaceous China, Haolong dongi, shows fossilized skin with microscopic cells and, for the first time in dinosaurs, hollow cutaneous spikes across much of the body. The spikes may have defended against predators, aided thermoregulation, or served sensory roles. Adults’ spike presence remains unknown. The find, described in Nature Ecology & Evolution (Feb 2026), broadens our understanding of dinosaur skin and body coverings.
