The Impact of Walking on Blood Sugar Levels

A study published in the journal Sports Medicine found that even a short walk of as little as five minutes can benefit health and lower blood sugar levels. While intermittent standing breaks throughout the day and after meals reduced glucose levels by 9.51% compared to prolonged sitting, intermittent light-intensity walking throughout the day showed a greater reduction of glucose by an average of 17.01%. Walking has numerous health benefits, including maintaining a healthy body, preventing or managing high blood pressure and heart disease, boosting the immune system, increasing energy levels, and improving balance. It is recommended to start slowly and gradually increase intensity, and easy ways to incorporate walking into daily routines include avoiding driving to walkable destinations, walking with a friend for accountability, and using a treadmill or marching in place.
