Billie Eilish's Coming Out Leads to Significant Follower Loss

Grammy-winning musician Billie Eilish has lost 100,000 followers on Instagram after coming out as attracted to women. Eilish revealed her sexuality in an interview last month and expressed surprise that fans didn't already know. While the loss of followers may be disappointing, it could be argued that those fans were never truly supportive in the first place. This isn't the first time Eilish has experienced a significant drop in followers, as she previously lost 100,000 followers due to a magazine cover shoot. "Elon Musk Cleans Up Twitter, Warns of Follower Count Drop"

Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will begin purging inactive accounts, but did not provide specifics on when the purge would begin or what the inactivity cutoff is. Musk warned users that they may see a decrease in follower count as a result of the move. He also stated that old accounts would be archived, but it is unclear what will happen to those profiles. Twitter's current inactive account policy considers accounts inactive after 30 days of not logging in, and prolonged inactivity can lead to account deletion.

Twitter to Purge Inactive Accounts and Free Up Handles for Reuse.

The move comes after Musk reportedly threatened to reassign NPR's handle on the website due to inactivity. Twitter's policy still states that it "cannot release inactive usernames at this time," but Musk suggested that abandoned handles will be freed up. Deceased users' accounts will be archived.

Twitter to waive $1000 verification fee for top 10,000 most-followed companies and organizations.

Twitter will offer a free pass for the top 10,000 organizations by follower count and the 500 advertisers that spend the most on its platform to retain their verified status and checkmarks without paying the $1,000 monthly fee for Verification for Organizations. Twitter is winding down the legacy verified program in April and introducing Twitter Verification for Organizations, which will allow companies to keep their verification and denote specific accounts as "affiliated" for $1,000 a month plus $50 a month for each affiliated account. The move could help keep the steep price hike in verification from affecting the Twitter community too much and is an olive branch to advertisers whose relationship with Twitter has been strained.
