Cambridge University Library is working to rescue valuable historical data stored on old floppy disks, including materials from Stephen Hawking, amid concerns that digital data from the past 50 years could be lost due to degradation and obsolete technology, risking a 'digital dark age.'
Media outlets like Vice have faced concerns about website deletion as they pivot away from traditional journalism, leaving journalists scrambling to save their work. While technical challenges exist in maintaining defunct websites, experts argue that it is not prohibitively expensive to host static page archives. Despite the vital work of organizations and tools to archive the internet, the responsibility should not fall solely on journalists, especially when media executives have been criticized for overpaying themselves while their companies struggle.
A collector and archivist named Grace Klich owns one of the 20 Volkswagen Beetle cars that were transformed into Pikachu-themed vehicles to promote Pokémon in the late 1990s. These cars were used at events and given away in contests, and Klich has spent years and thousands of dollars restoring her car, known as Pikabug #7. She has also connected with other collectors who own the remaining cars and uses her online platform to preserve and document Pokémon's forgotten history, including old promotional events and merchandise. Klich hopes to encourage others to come forward with their own pieces of Pokémon history for preservation.
Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will begin purging inactive accounts, but did not provide specifics on when the purge would begin or what the inactivity cutoff is. Musk warned users that they may see a decrease in follower count as a result of the move. He also stated that old accounts would be archived, but it is unclear what will happen to those profiles. Twitter's current inactive account policy considers accounts inactive after 30 days of not logging in, and prolonged inactivity can lead to account deletion.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk plans to remove inactive accounts that have been dormant for several years to free up abandoned handles. However, concerns have been raised about losing access to accounts of deceased relatives and tweets that hold historical value. Musk hinted that old accounts would be archived rather than deleted. Twitter's inactive-account policy states that users must log in at least every 30 days, and accounts may be permanently removed if left dormant.
High quality scans of Sugimori Ken's original watercolour artwork of the first 251 Pokémon species are being shared with the Pokémon community for the first time by YouTuber and Pokémon archivist LewTwo. The scans were sent to Lewtwo by Twitter user ExcaliburZero_Z and are hoped to be archived for preservation. The new scans show clearer outlines and less washed-out colours, making the Pokémon look more like their in-game counterparts. Lewtwo plans to work with sites such as Bulbapedia to share the new scans and will also put them on their own Pokémon Asset Archive.
