Texas Woman Escapes State for Abortion Amid Legal Battle

A pregnant Texas woman, Kate Cox, who was seeking court permission for an abortion due to her fetus having a fatal condition, has left the state and gone to another undisclosed location for the procedure. Cox's health and ability to have more children were at risk, and she had been to the emergency room multiple times. The Texas Supreme Court had not yet ruled on her case, which became a high-profile test of abortion bans in Texas and other GOP-controlled states. The court had previously paused a lower judge's order granting Cox permission for an abortion. Cox's lawsuit is believed to be the first of its kind since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year.

New Abortion Cutoff Proposal Lacks Exception for Fetal Anomalies.

Nebraska State Senator Ben Hansen has proposed a stricter abortion ban that would outlaw abortions at 9 to 10 weeks after fertilization, two weeks sooner than the previous proposal by State Senator Merv Riepe. Hansen's proposal would also restrict certain gender-affirming healthcare for trans minors and does not include an exception for fetal anomalies, which would mean fewer choices for parents who discover that a developing fetus might be incompatible with life outside the womb. Doctors who support abortion rights argue that it is cruel to force women to carry a baby to full term, knowing it cannot survive, while others believe that challenging pregnancies deserve to be protected and valued.
