Federal Judge Approves 8-Year Settlement Barring Migrant Family Separations

A federal judge in San Diego has approved a settlement that prohibits U.S. officials from separating migrant families who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. The settlement, resulting from a 2018 lawsuit filed by the ACLU, also offers aid to thousands of parents and children who were previously forced apart under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy. Crossing the border illegally will no longer be a reason for family separation for the next eight years. The settlement provides assistance to reunite families, clear immigration records, and offers work permits, housing assistance, medical care, and counseling. The judge praised the settlement but emphasized the need to continue searching for all children who remain separated from their parents.

Settlement Reached: Biden Administration Ends Family Separations at the Border

Lawyers representing migrant families separated at the U.S. border during the Trump administration have reached a settlement with the federal government, allowing the migrants to remain in the United States and apply for asylum. The agreement, filed in federal court, concludes years of negotiations in a class-action lawsuit addressing the harm caused by family separations. If approved, the settlement would grant the families permission to live and work legally in the U.S. while awaiting asylum decisions. Families that prevail in their asylum cases will be eligible for green cards and eventual U.S. citizenship.

Settlement Reached: Biden Administration Ends Migrant Family Separations

The Biden administration has reached a proposed settlement agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) regarding the separation of migrant families under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy. The settlement, which still needs to be reviewed and approved by a federal judge, would establish new standards to limit future family separations and provide support services for those previously separated. It would also grant temporary relief from deportation and work authorizations for over 3,900 children and their families. The ACLU estimates that around 1,000 children still remain separated from their parents.

"Immigration Attorney Exposes Texas' Harsh and Cruel Family Separation Policy at the Border"

Texas has separated at least 26 migrant family units at the southern border since July 10 under Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star border initiative, according to an immigration attorney. The majority of the clients were Venezuelan asylum seekers who were hoping to turn themselves in to US immigration authorities but were instead waived by Texas Department of Public Safety state troopers to areas where they were rounded up and separated. Unlike the family separations under the Trump administration, Texas is taking men away from their families. The troopers are arresting the fathers for criminal trespass, while the mothers and children are turned over to US Border Patrol agents. The state's actions have caused confusion and concern among the separated families, who have little or no way to communicate with each other. Despite the arrests, the separated families can continue their asylum process under federal law. The Biden administration has expressed concerns about Abbott's measures along the Texas-Mexico border.
