Epigenetic Age Acceleration Impairs Memory and Cognition

New research suggests that our biological age, as measured by epigenetic clocks based on DNA methylation patterns, may be a better predictor of cognitive performance than our chronological age. The study found that individuals with a higher biological age than their chronological age performed worse on tasks measuring processing speed and working memory. Additionally, those with a higher biological age showed more variability in their cognitive performance, indicating potentially less stable cognitive abilities. The findings highlight the importance of considering biological age in understanding age-related cognitive decline and may have implications for future approaches to aging and cognitive health.
