Autopsy reveals Atlanta protester sustained 57 gunshot wounds in "Cop City" protest.

An environmental activist, Manuel Esteban Paez “Tortuguita” Terán, who was killed while protesting a planned law enforcement training facility in Atlanta, sustained at least 57 gunshot wounds, according to a county medical examiner report. The autopsy report leaves unanswered questions about whether there was forensic evidence proving that Terán fired a gun. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has said officers shot Terán after the activist shot and seriously wounded a state trooper, but fellow protesters and Terán’s family have disputed that account. The GBI has completed its investigation and given the casefile to the Mountain Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

Autopsy Reveals 'Cop City' Activist Shot Over 50 Times by Officers in Atlanta

The official autopsy report for Manuel Paez Terán, an environmental activist shot and killed by police during a raid in a Georgia public park, does not support the state's narrative that Paez Terán fired first. The report states that gunpowder residue was not found on Paez Terán's hands or clothes, but the absence of residue is not conclusive evidence that he did not fire a weapon. The autopsy report details the 57 gunshot wounds Paez Terán received, but does little to clarify what actually happened that day.

Activist's Tent Targeted in 'Cop City' Raid with Pepperball Gun

Police incident reports reveal that officers fired rounds from a pepperball gun into Manuel Paez Terán’s closed tent before an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of the environmental activist and injury of an officer during a raid on an Atlanta forest to clear activists who were camping there to prevent construction on a $90m police and fire department training facility known as “Cop City”. The incident reports reveal that officers were first to discharge a weapon and fired a barrage of shots blindly into the tent, killing Paez Terán inside.

Controversy Surrounds Proposed "Cop City" Training Facility in Atlanta.

Private equity firms Roark Capital and Silver Lake Management have been linked to the development of a police and fire service training complex in Atlanta known as "Cop City" and the Atlanta police force. Roark Capital owns Inspire Brands, whose CEO sits on the board of trustees of the Atlanta police foundation (APF), which is raising $60m from corporate funders to build Cop City in a forest previously earmarked for a public park. Silver Lake Management has invested more than $1bn in Motorola Solutions, which designed and implemented the surveillance system for Operation Shield, a program that boasts more than 12,800 interconnected cameras monitored by the police. The police crackdown on community protests against Cop City has led to dozens of charges of domestic terrorism and the police killing of environmental activist Manuel Paez Terán.

Lack of Autopsy Results for Activist Shot by Police Raises Concerns.

The autopsy of Manuel Paez Terán, an environmental activist shot and killed by police during a raid near Atlanta, Georgia, has not been completed nearly two months after his death. The autopsy could provide information on whether Terán fired a gun first at officers, but it remains unclear what work remains undone. Paez Terán's family has filed a lawsuit against the city of Atlanta in pursuit of video and audio recordings made during the raid. The family-ordered autopsy appeared to show that the activist was sitting cross-legged, with their hands in front of their face, when hit by a hail of bullets.
