Bird Flu Outbreak Devastates Midwest Egg Farms

A Meeker County egg operation in Minnesota has culled 1.3 million chickens due to bird flu, marking the largest single-site loss in the state. This contributes to nearly 6 million egg-laying hens lost in recent outbreaks in Iowa and Minnesota. Michael Foods, part of Post Holdings, reported a loss of 5.7 million birds, affecting 14% of its egg supply. Egg prices have been rising, averaging $2.86 per dozen last month. While avian influenza has also been detected in cows, no cattle in Minnesota have tested positive. Federal authorities state the virus does not threaten the food supply, and human infection risk is low.

From Entrepreneur to Egg Mogul: How a 68-Year-Old Built a $460 Million Business

Matt O'Hayer, the founder of Vital Farms, the largest producer of pasture-raised eggs in the US, built a $450 million egg company by focusing on a "deeper purpose" rather than solely pursuing wealth. O'Hayer started the company in 2007 with 20 hens and a goal to raise egg-laying hens in a more humane environment. Vital Farms now works with over 300 family farms and brings in millions of dollars in revenue each year by marketing ethically produced eggs to customers willing to pay a premium. The company's success is attributed to its mission, taste, and flavor of the eggs, as well as its partnerships with major retailers. Despite facing challenges and lawsuits, Vital Farms aims to continue growing in the $14 billion US eggs market.
