"Neighborhood Disadvantage and Cognitive Decline: The Link to Dementia Risk"

New research published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia reveals a strong link between neighborhood socioeconomic status and cognitive abilities in older individuals, independent of brain pathologies associated with dementia. The study, based on autopsy cases, found that living in more disadvantaged neighborhoods was associated with lower cognitive abilities, even after adjusting for demographic factors and neuropathological changes. Interestingly, higher educational attainment seemed to mitigate the adverse effects of neighborhood disadvantage on cognitive function, suggesting that policies promoting equitable resource allocation, such as enhanced educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities, may have an impact on dementia.

Genetic Links: Learning as a Buffer for Alzheimer's and ADHD

A study conducted by researchers from Mass General Brigham examined the impact of genetics and educational attainment on cognitive decline in individuals with a mutation predisposing them to early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The study found that carriers of an additional high-risk mutation, APOE e4, experienced accelerated cognitive decline, while those with a protective APOE e2 mutation had delayed onset. However, higher educational attainment was associated with preserved cognitive ability, even among those with the highest genetic risk. The findings suggest that education may serve as a "cognitive reserve" that helps mitigate the effects of genetic risk factors on Alzheimer's onset.
