East Timor has been officially admitted to ASEAN, marking the group's first expansion since the 1990s, which offers the country economic opportunities and regional integration, despite some challenges in capacity and development.
Henry Kissinger, the former US Secretary of State, has been accused of war crimes and atrocities committed during his time in office. His realpolitik approach to foreign policy prioritized ideology over morality, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. Kissinger's alleged crimes include the secret bombing campaign in Cambodia, which led to a civil war and the rise of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. He also gave the green light for the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, resulting in a decades-long conflict. In Chile, Kissinger supported efforts to destabilize the democratically-elected government of Salvador Allende, leading to a military coup and the subsequent dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Kissinger also provided support to the military junta in Argentina during the Dirty War, and backed the genocide in East Pakistan, which later became Bangladesh. Despite these allegations, Kissinger remained a revered figure within US foreign policy circles until his death.
Myanmar's military government has ordered East Timor's top diplomat to leave the country, prompting East Timor to condemn the rare action and express solidarity with the people of Myanmar. East Timor has been a vocal critic of Myanmar's leadership and has supported efforts for the return of democratic order in the country. The expulsion comes amid ongoing violence and economic turmoil in Myanmar since the military coup in 2021.
A rare solar eclipse, known as a "ring of fire," was witnessed by thousands of people in Australia, Indonesia, and East Timor. The eclipse plunged part of Australia's northwest coast into brief midday darkness while temporarily cooling the tropical heat. The lucky few people in its path either saw the darkness of a total eclipse or a "ring of fire" as the sun peeked from behind the new moon. Such celestial events happen about once every decade, and the next one isn't until 2031.
A hybrid eclipse, the rarest type of eclipse, will occur over parts of Australia, East Timor, and occupied West Papua this Thursday. It will be the first hybrid eclipse since 2013 and mostly over ocean. People over a much larger area, in this case Australia and South-East Asia, will experience the dimming of a partial eclipse, and this one could be particularly worth viewing if skies are clear. The Sun and Moon take up almost exactly the same area of the sky, and a hybrid eclipse occurs when the Moon is close enough to produce a total eclipse over the nearest parts of the Earth, but when the eclipse path reaches areas made more distant by the curve of the Earth it becomes annular.
