Understanding the Inheritance of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease has been linked to certain genes, with the APOE gene being the most common one associated with late-onset Alzheimer's. Other genes like ABCA7, CLU, CR1, PICALM, PLD3, TREM2, and SORL1 are also being studied for their connection to the disease. While the chances of inheriting Alzheimer's are higher from the mother, the majority of cases (over 99%) are not inherited. However, young-onset, familial Alzheimer's and other rare types of dementia can be passed down due to faulty genes. Early identification of the disease is crucial for effective treatment.

Preschoolers with Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections at Higher Risk of Autism.

Preschoolers with common ear, nose, and throat (ENT) issues may be at risk of autism or high levels of autism traits, according to a study published in BMJ Open. The research, which tracked over 10,000 children from birth, suggests that early identification and treatment of ENT conditions may help improve these children’s quality of life and provide insight into the origins of autism.

Fetal Brain Scans May Reveal Early Signs of Autism.

Researchers from King’s College London have found a link between autism traits and isolated fetal ventriculomegaly, the most common antenatally-diagnosed brain abnormality. The study used MRI brain scans of children with isolated fetal ventriculomegaly to measure neurodevelopment and investigate the presence of autism traits at school age. The results may improve counseling for families and aid early identification, support, and intervention, with further research warranted to confirm initial findings within a larger population.
