Tesla Recalls 2 Million Vehicles in US for Autopilot Safety Issue
Tesla is recalling nearly all vehicles sold in the U.S., totaling over 2 million, to update software and address a defective driver monitoring system in Autopilot. The recall follows a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into crashes involving Autopilot. The update will increase warnings and alerts to drivers, limit the areas where basic Autopilot can operate, and suspend drivers who repeatedly fail to demonstrate continuous driving responsibility. However, safety experts argue that the recall does not address the underlying problem of Tesla's automated systems having difficulty detecting and stopping for obstacles. The recall covers models Y, S, 3, and X produced between 2012 and 2021. NHTSA's investigation remains open as they monitor the effectiveness of Tesla's remedies.
