Celebrities Unite to Aid Hawaii Wildfire Victims with Direct Payments
Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have established The People's Fund of Maui to provide direct payments of $1,200 per month to victims of the recent wildfires in Hawaii. The celebrities donated $10 million to kick off the fundraiser and are seeking additional public donations. The fund aims to assist adults whose homes were destroyed by the fires, offering them the agency to decide how best to use the funds. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided an initial payment of $700, but many have expressed that it falls short in addressing long-term recovery needs.
