The women were caught up in a wave of detentions following protests against Covid-19 controls that flared up across China in November, with authorities focusing on demonstrators who had left a digital trail.

Investigators follow a digital trail and discover that Kassanndra Cantrell, a pregnant woman who went missing, had been actively dating and confided in her best friend about her pregnancy. Detectives learned about an old boyfriend, Colin Dudley, who Kassanndra was still in touch with. Dudley was quick to help if someone needed money and was known for cooking meals for game nights. Kassanndra's white Mazda was found unlocked with the keys still inside in an industrial area where groups of homeless people often camp. Her phone was found in the Puget Sound, and detectives are still investigating her murder.
