Former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield Charged with Embezzlement and Misuse of Nonprofit Funds
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed 13 criminal charges against former Michigan House speaker Lee Chatfield and his wife, Stephanie Chatfield, for financial crimes related to the misuse of a multimillion-dollar fund. Chatfield faces charges including conducting a criminal enterprise, while his wife faces charges of embezzlement. The charges come after an investigation that also involved allegations of sexual assault, which the Attorney General decided not to pursue. Chatfield's attorney has criticized the charges as a politically motivated attack, while an attorney representing a woman who accused Chatfield of sexual assault expressed disappointment with the decision not to pursue those charges.
