California will start selling its own affordable insulin under the CalRx brand on Jan. 1, aiming to lower costs for diabetics, with prices as low as $11 per pen, as part of a broader effort to reduce prescription drug prices and increase access to essential medications.
California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a $50 million contract with nonprofit drugmaker Civica to produce insulin under the state's own label, CalRX, in an effort to lower the cost of pharmaceutical products for Californians. Pending FDA approval, a 10-milliliter vial of insulin would be made available for $30, compared to the usual $300. Patients who pay out of pocket for insulin would save between $2,000 and $4,000 annually. Civica will manufacture the three insulins most commonly used by U.S. citizens and will commit to delivering as much insulin as California needs under the CalRX label.
