NATO Suspends Security Pact as Russia Withdraws, Raising Arms Control Concerns
NATO allies have condemned Russia's decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), a key post-Cold War agreement, and have announced the suspension of its operation in response. Russia blamed the United States for undermining post-Cold War security with the enlargement of NATO. The United States and its allies will suspend treaty obligations effective December 7, citing Russia's war against Ukraine and its withdrawal from the treaty as altering circumstances. Russia's ambassador to the United States criticized Washington for shifting responsibility for the destruction of international security architecture.
