Germany's Cabinet Approves Landmark Bill to Legalize Cannabis
Germany's Cabinet has approved a plan to liberalize rules on cannabis, paving the way for the decriminalization of possession of limited amounts and the establishment of "cannabis clubs" for recreational use. The legislation, which still needs parliamentary approval, aims to legalize possession of up to 25 grams of cannabis and allow individuals to grow up to three plants. Members of nonprofit cannabis clubs would be able to purchase up to 25 grams per day, with a maximum of 50 grams per month. The government hopes this move will reduce drug-related crime and protect consumers from contaminated products. However, critics argue that the plan could burden the judicial system and increase demand for black-market cannabis. The legislation is the first step in a two-part plan, with the government also considering regulated commercial supply chains in select regions for evaluation.
