A flash flood warning is in effect until 11:30 p.m. for Newark Valley and surrounding areas in Tioga and Broome counties, New York, due to heavy rains with 3 to 4.5 inches already fallen and additional rainfall expected, threatening severe flooding in the region.
Five women from Broome County were killed in a tragic accident on Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, when their minivan collided with a concrete divider and was then struck by a tractor-trailer. The victims were identified as Harvrist Zebari, Fatma Ahmed, Shahzinaz Mizouri, Aleen Ameen, and Berivan Zebara. The crash also left two others injured. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar declared a State of Emergency due to the potential relocation of asylum seekers from New York City to Broome County, citing a lack of available housing. Title 42, which allowed authorities to send asylum seekers back over the county’s southern border with Mexico over concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to expire at midnight. The emergency order prohibits municipalities from outside of Broome County from making contracts with hotels, motels, and more without a permit issued by the county and vice versa.
