Record Big Freeze in China Triggers Beijing Subway Crash, Injuring Over 600
A subway crash in Beijing, China, caused by freezing temperatures resulted in 102 commuters sustaining broken bones. The collision occurred when a moving train was unable to brake on icy tracks and crashed into a stationary train due to deteriorating track conditions caused by heavy snowfall. The impact caused the last two carriages of one train to detach completely. Over 500 people were sent to hospitals for medical checks, with 423 discharged by Friday morning. President Xi Jinping called for "all-out" emergency response efforts as a cold wave gripped the country, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing in many regions.
