New Training Method Enhances Seniors' Cognitive and Physical Health

A study by the Universities of Birmingham and Extremadura reveals that Brain Endurance Training (BET), which combines cognitive tasks with physical exercise, significantly enhances both cognitive and physical performance in older adults. BET, originally developed for athletes, outperforms traditional exercise programs by improving attention, executive function, and physical endurance, thereby reducing risks like falls. The study involved 24 sedentary women aged 65-78, showing BET's potential as an effective intervention for healthy aging.

Unlock Healthy Aging with Brain Games and Exercise

A new study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise suggests that combining brain games with exercise, known as brain endurance training (BET), can significantly enhance cognitive and physical performance in older adults. Originally developed for athletes, BET involves cognitive tasks followed by physical exercise, improving attention, executive function, and physical endurance. The study found that older adults engaging in BET showed greater improvements in cognitive and physical performance compared to those who only exercised or did neither. BET could potentially reduce the risk of falls and accidents in older adults.

"Post-Exercise Mental Weightlifting Boosts Speed and Muscle Growth, Study Finds"

A new study has found that incorporating mental training into physical training can significantly improve endurance performance. The study, which focused on elite road cyclists, used a method called Brain Endurance Training (BET) where participants performed cognitively-demanding tasks after each training session. The results showed that Post-BET increased stamina by 11.4% and 17.1% for different power outputs, improved power and distance in time trials, and enhanced cognitive performance. The findings suggest that mental "weight lifting" can fortify the brain against mental fatigue, reducing the perception of effort and improving endurance.

The Link Between Mental Fatigue and Physical Performance.

Mental fatigue resulting from mentally demanding tasks can lead to an increased sense of exertion during physical exercise, according to a study by the University of Birmingham. The researchers recommend coaches reduce athletes’ exposure to mentally challenging tasks, such as smartphone use, before and during training and competitions. Longer term, they should consider ‘brain endurance training’ to increase resilience to mental fatigue. The study suggests that taking the effects of mental fatigue into account during training may help athletes perform better.
