Boötid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight: What to Expect

The unpredictable Bootid meteor shower peaks tonight, offering a chance to see shooting stars in the post-sunset sky, especially in the U.S., though visibility may vary. Observers should look away from city lights and aim around 40 degrees above the radiant in Bootes for the best view, with the shower being generally weak but occasionally surprising. Recent sightings include a fireball over the northeastern U.S. and a meteor crossing the Milky Way in Malaysia.

Catch the Unpredictable June Boötid Meteor Shower Tonight in Pittsburgh and Central Ohio.

The annual June Boötid meteor shower will peak tonight and will be visible from dusk until dawn in the Pittsburgh area. The meteor shower is named after the constellation Boötes, where it appears to emanate from, but its actual origin is a debris trail left behind by the comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke. The Earth's rotation turns Pittsburgh to face towards the incoming meteors, maximizing the number that produce short trails as they burn up. The meteoroids strike Earth's atmosphere at an average speed of 18 km per second, or roughly 40,000 mph.
