Russia Delivers Free Grain Shipments to Africa

Russia has begun sending free shipments of grain totaling up to 200,000 tonnes to six African countries, fulfilling a promise made by President Vladimir Putin. Ships have already left Russian ports for Burkina Faso and Somalia, with additional shipments to Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Mali, and the Central African Republic to follow. This comes after Russia withdrew from the UN-brokered Black Sea grain deal, which aimed to inject more wheat and other products into world markets. Ukraine, in response to the collapse of the deal, established a new Black Sea shipping corridor, with 151 ships using it since August.

"Russia's Use of Cheap Grain as a Weapon Sparks EU Warning and Grain Deal Fallout"

The European Union (EU) has warned developing countries that Russia is using cheap grain as a means to create new dependencies and exacerbate economic vulnerabilities and global food insecurity. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged developing and Group of 20 countries to push Moscow to return to the Black Sea grain export deal and stop targeting Ukraine's agricultural infrastructure. Russia, which recently quit the deal, has been approaching vulnerable countries with discounted grain shipments, claiming to solve a problem it created itself. The EU emphasized that there are no sanctions on Russia's food and fertilizer exports to third countries and expressed its commitment to preventing over-compliance and de-risking activities. The EU will continue supporting efforts to revive the Black Sea grain deal and counter Russian disinformation on global food security.

"Putin Escalates Economic Warfare on Ukraine with Repeated Odessa Bombings"

Russian airstrikes on Ukraine's major port city of Odessa, particularly targeting its grain industry, are seen as part of an economic war aimed at extracting maximum pain following Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to terminate a United Nations-brokered deal allowing grain exports from the Black Sea. The attacks have caused significant damage to the grain industry, destroyed thousands of tons of grain, and are seen as an attempt to cripple Ukraine's agricultural sector, which accounted for about 20 percent of its economy. The use of the Danube River as an alternative trade route has shown promise, but falls far short of satisfying export potential. The United States has provided crucial support to Ukrainian farmers, but some farmers are pessimistic about the survival of their businesses amidst the ongoing economic warfare.

"Putin Escalates Economic Warfare on Ukraine with Repeated Odessa Bombings"

Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to terminate a United Nations-brokered deal allowing grain exports from the Black Sea has led to a series of attacks on Ukraine's agriculture sector, including airstrikes on grain storage facilities near Odessa. The attacks have caused significant damage to the industry, destroying tens of thousands of tons of grain and crippling Ukraine's economy. The United States and international aid agencies dispute Russia's claim that Western sanctions are to blame for the collapse of the deal, seeing it as part of Putin's intentional strategy to decimate Ukraine's economy. The use of the Danube River as an alternative trade route has shown promise, but it still falls short of satisfying Ukraine's export potential. African leaders have urged Putin to halt the blockade and return to the grain deal, warning of a worsening food crisis in some African nations. The United States has provided crucial support to Ukrainian farmers, but many are pessimistic about the survival of their businesses.
