CBS has ordered the new daytime drama "The Gates" to series, set to premiere in January 2025, following the lives of a wealthy Black family in a gated community, with Michele Val Jean as writer and showrunner. The city of Aurora has agreed to a $1.9m settlement with a Black family who were held at gunpoint by police in a case of mistaken identity, with the girls' portions being placed into annuities. The incident, which occurred in 2020, sparked outrage and led to a lawsuit claiming evidence of systemic racism within the police department. This settlement follows previous payouts by Aurora over police misconduct, including a $15m settlement with the parents of Elijah McClain, who was killed in 2019. A state civil rights investigation found a culture of racially biased policing in the department, and the family's lawyer hopes the settlement sends a message to law enforcement nationwide about using discretion in their responses.
