A new study has found that infants born to mothers who used marijuana during pregnancy were twice as likely to be underweight and nearly twice as likely to be premature compared to infants not exposed to cannabis. Cannabis-exposed infants were also 2.5 times more likely to be admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. Prenatal exposure to cannabis can cross the placenta and bind to receptors in the fetal brain, potentially leading to adverse birth outcomes. While there was no increased risk of birth defects or infant death, marijuana use during pregnancy was associated with low birth weight and increased risks of developmental delays, ADHD, learning disabilities, emotional problems, and premature delivery. Experts advise pregnant women using marijuana to discuss the issue with their doctors and discontinue use due to concerns about impaired neurodevelopment and adverse effects on maternal and fetal health.
