California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law requiring large businesses in the state to disclose their planet-warming emissions, making it the most comprehensive mandate of its kind in the US. The law applies to over 5,300 companies with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion and requires them to report both direct and indirect emissions, including those from building operations, employee travel, and product transportation. Advocates argue that the law will increase transparency and encourage businesses to reduce their emissions, while opponents claim it will burden companies and duplicate federal efforts. The law is set to be implemented by 2027.
