A study finds that even elite athletes have a 'metabolic ceiling' at about 2.4 times their basal metabolic rate over long periods, limiting how much energy they can expend, with increased activity leading to unconscious reductions in other energy uses.
Withings has launched its latest entry-level smart scale, the Body Smart, which comes with an Eyes Closed mode that displays encouraging messages instead of weight. The scale supports up to eight users and offers accurate weight measurements up to 50 grams. It can also track metrics such as heart rate, visceral fat, and metabolic age using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis technology. Withings claims that the Body Smart will be able to measure basal metabolic rate and determine metabolic age starting in May. The mid-tier Body Comp scale has been upgraded with a color LCD screen, while the high-end Body Scan option will be available in the US in the coming months.
