"Enhanced AV1 Decoder Released for Android Devices"

Google has added a software-based AV1 decoder to most Android devices, allowing them to support AV1 without the need for hardware support. This update is available on devices running Android 12 or higher through a software update. The "dav1d" software decoder enables most devices to decode 720p at 30 frames per second, with apps needing to opt in to support AV1 via software decoding. YouTube has already opted in to use AV1 on compatible devices, potentially leading to increased power usage.

"Twitch, NVIDIA, and OBS Collaborate for Enhanced Multi-Encode Livestreaming"

NVIDIA and Twitch are introducing Enhanced Broadcasting, powered by OBS, to improve video streaming quality and reduce latency, utilizing NVIDIA NVENC encoder for multi-encoded video streams on GeForce RTX and GTX GPUs. The collaboration aims to enable simultaneous streaming in up to three resolutions at a maximum of 1080p, with future plans for higher bit rates, 4K resolution, and support for up to four concurrent streams. The addition of AV1 support, a royalty-free codec, will require streaming hardware to support encoding in this format, but is expected to become more popular as modern GPUs and mobile SoCs continue to be updated with AV1 decoding.

AV1 Takes Center Stage: OBS, NVIDIA, and AMD Battle for Best Encoder.

OBS Studio 29.1 now supports AV1 stream encoding when broadcasting to YouTube, enabling higher-quality footage than H.264 at similar bitrates and higher resolutions. The new Enhanced RTMP standard and hardware encoding work with AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA GPUs, and software can be used if the CPU is powerful enough. YouTube still transcodes the output to its VP9 format, but the image quality loss is slight. The change hints at a future where creators can stream video that looks as good to viewers as it does on the host's PC.
