US Confirms Military Coup in Gabon

The United States has determined that a military coup has occurred in Gabon and, in accordance with the Department of State's annual appropriations act, most U.S. assistance to the Gabonese government is being suspended. However, humanitarian, health, and education aid will continue to support the people of Gabon. The U.S. remains committed to assisting Gabon in achieving a timely transition to democratic civilian governance and will resume assistance once concrete steps are taken by the transitional government to establish democratic rule. The United States stands with the Gabonese people in their pursuit of democracy, prosperity, and stability.

US Declares Military Coup in Niger, Suspends Aid and Training

The United States has determined that a military coup has occurred in Niger and, in accordance with the Department of State's annual appropriations act, most U.S. assistance to the Nigerien government is being suspended. This includes the temporary pause of foreign assistance programs, totaling nearly $200 million, which is now fully suspended. The Millennium Challenge Corporation has also suspended all assistance to Niger. However, the United States will continue to provide humanitarian, food, and health assistance to the people of Niger. The U.S. supports efforts by the Economic Community of West African States to restore democratic rule in Niger, and any resumption of assistance will depend on the establishment of democratic governance. The United States calls for the release of Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and all detainees.
