Regulators Ban Sunbed Ads Over Misleading Cancer Reduction Claims
A Scottish tanning salon chain, Indigo Sun, was found to have made misleading claims that sunbed use reduces cancer and heart disease deaths, based on a University of Edinburgh study. The UK's advertising watchdog, ASA, ruled the claims irresponsible and unsubstantiated, leading Indigo Sun to withdraw the ad. The company argued the study supported their claims, but the ASA emphasized the ad omitted important health risk information and was misleading.
