Nearly Half of Americans Have Hypertension, Yet Most Are Untreated or Uncontrolled

New NHANES data from 2021–2023 show 47% of Americans over 20 have hypertension, with 79% of those cases uncontrolled; among the uncontrolled, about 61% aren’t taking blood-pressure medications. Experts say many could reach the 130/80 target with medication and lifestyle changes, but awareness gaps and access issues hinder treatment, contributing to 664,470 deaths in 2023. The findings underscore the need for broader screening and better treatment uptake to improve cardiovascular health.

Effective Strategies for Lowering Blood Pressure and Reducing Cardiovascular Risks

Intensive treatment to reduce systolic blood pressure to less than 120 mm Hg was found to be more effective in preventing cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, compared to standard treatment with a target of less than 140 mm Hg, according to a three-year trial. The study included participants at high risk for cardiovascular disease, regardless of their diabetes status or history of stroke. The intensive treatment strategy was shown to be beneficial and safe, potentially saving more lives and reducing the global burden of heart disease.

"Cutting Salt Intake: A Natural Alternative to Blood Pressure Medication"

A study involving middle-aged to elderly individuals found that reducing dietary sodium intake resulted in a significant reduction in blood pressure, comparable to the effect of a commonly used antihypertensive medication. The blood pressure-lowering effect was observed in nearly 75% of participants and was independent of hypertension status and antihypertensive medication use. Adverse events were minimal. These findings suggest that dietary sodium reduction can be an effective strategy for lowering blood pressure in this population.
