Ancestry.com reviewed phone book listings from across the US to determine the three most popular last names in each state. The study found that Smith is the most common surname in the US, followed by Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams, and Anderson. The interactive map shows the most common surname in each state, with Hawaii being the only state where Lee, Wong, and Kim were the most popular.

Regional differences were also found, with Andersons being more common in the Northwest and Garcia being popular in Southwestern states.
