Ancestry.com reviewed phone book listings from across the US to determine the three most popular last names in each state and found that Smith is the most common surname in almost every state. Other popular surnames include Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams, and Anderson. Regional differences were also found, with Andersons being more common in the Northwest and Garcia being popular in Southwestern states. Hawaii was the only state where Lee, Wong, and Kim were the most popular last names.
