Ancestry.com reviewed phone book listings from across the US to determine the three most popular last names in each state. The study found that Smith is the most common surname in the US, except for five states. Other popular surnames include Johnson, Miller, Jones, Williams, and Anderson. Regional differences were also found, with Andersons being more common in the Northwest, Miller in the Midwest and Appalachian Mountain regions, and Garcia in Southwestern states. Hawaii was the only state where Lee, Wong, and Kim were the most popular last names.
