"New York Implements Stricter Gun Control Measures, Shifts Background Check Responsibility to State Police"
A new law in New York requiring background checks for ammunition purchases has taken effect, surviving a legal challenge. The law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in July 2022 after the Supreme Court overturned the state's century-old concealed carry law, shifts the responsibility of background checks from the National Instant Criminal background check system to the New York State Police. The law also mandates periodic onsite inspections of firearms dealers and imposes fees of $9 and $2.50 for firearms and ammunition purchases, respectively.
