AMD has released a new AGESA firmware to fix the voltage issue that caused certain AMD motherboards to destroy the Socket AM5 CPU. However, the new firmware limits the maximum SoC voltage value, resulting in worse memory compatibility than the previous version. Users with four memory modules are not likely to be able to overclock them as far, with sources unable to exceed 4400 MT/s with four DIMMs installed on the latest firmware. Nonetheless, the new firmware offers peace of mind to prevent the processor from dying due to overly-aggressive motherboard overclocking profiles.

AMD's openSIL to Replace AGESA Firmware for Client and Server CPUs.

AMD openSIL, an open-source silicon initialization project, is set to replace AGESA and will support all AMD processors, including client and server platforms, by 2026. The openSIL specification will also be open to every silicon vendor to participate in the project. The initial proof of concept code for AMD Genoa is expected to come soon, but the production-ready version of openSIL is not expected until around 2026, which is roughly in line with the introduction of AMD Zen 6 or Zen 7.

AMD has released a new firmware for board partners that limits the SoC Voltage to 1.3V, which solves the issue of burning Ryzen 7000 CPUs. The new AGESA will not impact Ryzen 7000 memory overclocking capability or Precision Boost Technology. AMD recommends all users to update their BIOS to ensure their system has the most up-to-date software for their processor. Users who were affected by this problem are asked to contact AMD support.
