"Health Risks of Ultra-Processed Foods: A Comprehensive Review"

A systematic umbrella review of existing meta-analyses evaluated the associations between exposure to ultra-processed foods and adverse health outcomes. The review identified 45 unique pooled analyses, finding direct associations between ultra-processed food exposure and various health parameters, including mortality, cancer, and mental, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and metabolic health outcomes. The evidence suggests that greater exposure to ultra-processed food is associated with a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, particularly cardiometabolic, common mental disorder, and mortality outcomes, providing support for public health measures to target and reduce dietary exposure to ultra-processed foods for improved human health.

Nighttime stays in emergency rooms increase mortality risk for older adults, warns study

Older adults who spend a night in the emergency room (ER) before being admitted to the hospital face a higher risk of dying in the facility, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study found that patients who had to spend a full night in the ER were more likely to die within 30 days compared to those who were admitted to a regular hospital room before midnight. They were also more likely to experience adverse health outcomes such as falls, infections, bleeding, and cardiovascular events. The risk was highest for patients who required assistance with daily functions. The study highlights the need for changes in the healthcare system, including insurance reform and more robust primary care, to address the challenges faced by older adults in the emergency care environment.
