South Africa on edge as protests and arrests escalate.

The Marxist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party in South Africa has called for a "national shutdown" to demand the resignation of President Cyril Ramaphosa, sparking fears of violence. Police and soldiers have been deployed across the country to increase security presence. The EFF is allied with a number of anti-ANC unions and draws its primary support from Black South Africans who feel left behind by the governing party. The ANC is widely expected to lose its majority at next year’s elections and could come to rely on the EFF as a coalition partner.
