International Support Grows for Ukraine's Genocide Challenge against Russia at World Court

More than two dozen European states, along with Australia and Canada, have asked the World Court to determine its jurisdiction in a case brought by Ukraine, alleging that Russia abused the Genocide Convention as a pretext for invading Ukraine. Germany and all 32 states who spoke at the World Court supported Ukraine's case, arguing that the court should proceed to the merits stage. Ukraine argues that Russia falsely claimed there was a risk of genocide in eastern Ukraine to justify its invasion. Russia has asked the court to dismiss the case, claiming Ukraine's legal arguments are flawed.
