Global Water Crisis: 25 Countries Facing Extreme Water Stress, with Europe Among the Most Affected

More than two dozen countries, including Bahrain and Cyprus, are using 80% of their renewable water supply every year, putting them at high risk of running out of water and facing extreme water stress. A quarter of the world's population is currently experiencing extreme water stress, jeopardizing lives, jobs, food, and energy security. The Middle East and North Africa are the worst affected regions, with 83% of people exposed to high water stress, a figure expected to reach 100% by 2050. Demand for water is increasing globally, and by 2050, 31% of global GDP will be exposed to extreme water stress. Proper management and solutions such as efficient agriculture, wastewater treatment, desalination, and reducing water-intensive practices are crucial to prevent water crises.
