Fatal Shark Attacks Shake Tourists in Egypt's Red Sea

Shark attacks are generally rare, with confirmed unprovoked cases totalling 57 worldwide in 2022, according to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF). However, Egypt's Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, have seen a number of fatal attacks in recent years, with two unprovoked fatal attacks happening in Hurghada in 2022. The country's tourism industry has also suffered from the fallout of terrorist attacks, but authorities have sought to revive the sector, including building a 22-mile long concrete and wire wall around the tourist resort of Sharm El-Sheikh in 2021.
